On 14 May 2012, Mr. Tomwit Jarnson, Consul-General of Thailand in Mumbai, Mr. Adul Chotinisakorn, Executive Director, Thai Trade Center in Mumbai together with officials from the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi and the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Mumbai had a meeting with the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) during a road trip to Gujarat to learn about business opportunities for Thai entrepreneurs.
The Thai delegation was warmly welcomed by Mr. Rohit Mehta, President of SGCCI and Mr. Paresh R. Patel, the vice President of SGCCI and the incoming President of SGCCI as well as many businessmen in various fields and members of SGCCI.
SGCCI is the oldest and one of the most active Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Gujarat (established in 1940). Currently, it has over 96 trade associations as members. Diamonds and textiles are its two main industries with 80% of diamonds in the world being processed in Surat and around 14 million meters of synthetic fabrics made each day. Other prominent business sectors are food processing, pharmaceutical and chemical products, engineering and green technology. Surat is just 40 minutes away from Mumbai by plane and roughly 2 hours from New Delhi by flight.
Invitations to participate in the Sparkle Surat 2012, a diamond exhibition in December 2012, as well as the 3rd Surat Auto Expo 2013 during 25 – 28 January 2013 were extended to Thai businesses.
The Thai delegation was very much impressed by infrastructure of Surat and of Gujarat in general as its road network is in excellent condition with a surplus production of electricity and competent labour.
After the road trip in Gujarat, Mr. Adul Chotinisakorn is scheduled to meet Thai businessmen in Bangkok with whom he will share information about economic opportunities in Surat and in Gujarat. Plans to organize visits to Gujarat by high-level Thai business delegations are in the pipeline.
