Thai and India trade will reach $14 billion in 2015, the Thai Consul General to Southern States of India Mr.Chanchai Charanvatnakit told the audience at the Seminar on “Business Opportunities in Thailand” in Hyderabad on 16 May. The Seminar was jointly organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Andhra Pradesh State Council-APSC.
Consul General Chanchai remarked on the special bond between Thailand and India dating back thousands of years. Thai and Indians share common cultural, religious and historical heritage, which is still very much in evidence today. He expressed confidence that this relation will further be enhanced through trade between the two countries.
Bilateral trade will be further facilitated with the establishment of Chennai as the gateway for maritime connectivity between India-ASEAN and Thailand, as the Thai Prime Minister (Ms. Yingluck Shinawatra) has proposed during her successful visit to India as the Chief Guest of 63rd India Republic Day celebrations on 26 March 2012. "This connectivity can save time for shipment between India and Thailand and further to ASEAN and China about one or two weeks,” the Consul-General said.
With regard to tourism, he remarked that that due to the recent floods of Central Thailand, the number of Indian tourists was below the target of 10 lakh, with around 9.2 lakh people visiting the country in 2011. He was confident, however, that Thailand "will reach 10 lakh Indian tourists this year."
