The contribution of manufacturing sector in the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) may fall below 15 % in 2013-14 owing to demand slowdown, leading to unutilised excess capacity, a survey has said.
During 2012-13, the share of manufacturing sector in the GDP declined to 15.2 %, compared to 15.7 % in the previous financial year.
The government has introduced the National Manufacturing Policy in October 2011, which seeks to raise the share of manufacturing to GDP from 16-25 % within a decade and create 100 million jobs.
However, the manufacturing sector, which constitutes over 75 % of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), grew by 3.2 % in March as against a decline in output by 3.6 % in the same month of 2012.
