NEW DELHI, October 12 – LIVEMINT – Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) have decided to enter the power transmission business in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka by setting up joint ventures with local partners. India wants to enter their domestic markets just in order to boost growth. Such transmission links would help to build an electricity grid of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), a bloc that also includes Afghanistan, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal and Pakistan. The grid would make it easier for the member countries to meet electricity demand and boost regional economic and political cooperation. – LIVEMINT – The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) which is responsible for about 40% of world crude supply has reduced its demand estimate due to threats to the world economy. OPEC member countries are Algeria, Angola, Ecuador, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela. In China, oil demand is bound to uncertainty because of new government policies aimed at reducing transport fuel use, whereas in India, the increase in retail prices is expected to play a major role in dampening oil consumption. – ECONOMIC TIMES – President of Myanmar Thein Sein is on the tour to India which is a significant step towards future crucial developments that would impact India-Myanmar relations. After the recent visit by Myanmar's trade minister, the two governments announced a decision to double bilateral trade to $3 billion by 2015. – ECONOMIC TIMES – A report released by the International Food Policy and Research Institute has ranked India below its South Asian neighbor countries such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka and China in the global hunger index 2011. The report has blamed high volatility in food prices as the main reason for rising hunger levels worldwide. While, India stood 67th amongst 81 countries, Pakistan ranked 59, China ranked 4, Vietnam ranked 25 and Sri Lanka ranked 36 in the Global Hunger Index (GHI). – ECONOMIC TIMES – Due to attack of natural calamities such as Tsunami in Japan, the biggest automaker company of the country, Toyota has decided to slow down its production at its three production plant in Thailand till October 15.
