NEW DELHI, November 30 – LIVEMINT – After Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard recently announcement to sell uranium to India, keeping aside her country’s longstanding reservations over supplying the nuclear fuel to the country, negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) between India and Australia seems to gain momentum soon. It is expected that by the end of 2012, the deal would be finalised. Bilateral trade between India and Australia in 2010-11 contracted 9.3% to $12.5 billion. India exported goods worth $1.7 billion to Australia and imported goods worth $10.8 billion during the year. Coal, gold, copper ores and concentrates, and petroleum account for over 80% of India’s imports from Australia, whereas, India’s major exports to Australia are pearls and gems, other jewellery, rotating electric plants, and pharmaceutical products. – BUSINESS STANDARD – The largest independent restaurant operator in Central and Eastern Europe, AmRest Holdings SE, is planning on opening a chain of restaurants in India serving Italian cuisine with its first outlet set to open before middle of next year. The company which owns franchisees of six brands including Pizzahut, KFC and Starbucks, is planning to open five to ten restaurants of the La Tagliatella brand in India over the next one to two years. India would be the company's first venture outside Europe followed by China in later months. Like other examples of 'Indianisation' of popular western brands such as McDonalds, Subway, Pizzahut, AmRest will also look to infuse the Indian taste to at a few of its products. – ECONOMIC TIMES – Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has rejected calls to reverse a decision to open up India's retail sector to global giants such as Walmart Inc, asserting the move will help farmers and consumers, increase employment and modernise a sector dominated by small stores. Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who has strongly backed the move to allow foreign retail companies to own 51% of Indian supermarkets, will address MPs on Wednesday on the issue of FDI in multi-brand retail as well as other concerns such as inflation. Earlier on Tuesday morning, a meeting between the government and Opposition parties failed to work out a formula that would allow Parliament to function.
