NEW DELHI, January 16 – LIVEMINT – Honda Motor Co. Ltd has directed its Indian unit to supply critical automobile parts to markets in Latin America and South-east Asia after the Japanese car maker’s Thailand unit had to suspend production because of floods. The floods in Thailand have limited the firm’s production capacity in India as it imports parts from its South-east Asian neighbour. Out of the five models that are produced in India, only the Accord and the Civic models are being manufactured currently. The company said it has pending orders for at least 13,500 cars in India. – BUSINESS STANDARD – The government notified its permission last week for up to 100 % foreign direct investment (FDI) in single brand retail, it put in the condition of 30 % sourcing from Indian small and medium scale industries by foreign majors. The condition will pose a hurdle for those wanting to enter the India market on their own, without a local partner. Many prominent American brands, including GAP and Abercrombie, want to set up shop in India without getting into the local partnership route. Other global brands waiting to enter include Ikea, Prada, Hennes & Mauritz, and Arcadia. Among the global retailers already present in India either through franchisee or local JVs are Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Jimmy Choo, Zara, Marks & Spencer and Canali. French luxury brand Christian Louboutin got the government nod recently to operate in India. – BUSINESS STANDARD – Hariyali Kisaan Bazaar, India’s biggest rural retail chain by sales, which operates 230 stores across eight states and had seen good growth in the past two years, said it had seen a fall in rural demand in the past two to three months. A drop in prices of potatoes, onions and some other vegetables, leading to low realisation for farmers, and an increase in cost of fertiliser, are reasons for these changed sentiment. Except on necessary agricultural inputs, rural consumers are just not spending as much as they used to, it said. Rural retail has been a tough ride for companies. Most have faced problems due to infrastructure, distribution and fluctuating rural incomes, along with competition from local kirana stores, which operate at much lower costs. – BUSINESS STANDARD – Taking a note of automobile ancillary sector in Rajkot, the British Deputy High Commissioner for Western India, Peter Beckingham and his team maintained that there were good business opportunities in auto component sector in the city. The team of top British officials visited more than 20 companies in Rajkot including Captain Tractors, Amul Industries, Jay Well Techno and Jyoti CNC. Rajkot has more than 500 auto component manufacturers with a net turnover of around US $300 million.
