Tamil Nadu, the fourth largest states of India is the southern-most Indian state, surrounded by Andhra Pradesh on the north, Karnataka & Kerala on the west, Indian Ocean on the south, and Bay of Bengal on the east. It is among the most industrialised states in the country. Tamil Nadu has strong human resource development with 59 universities, 40 medical colleges, 517 engineering colleges, 447 polytechnics & 20 dental colleges. According to the Good Governance Index 2019, Tamil Nadu ranked first in terms of governance.
Between 2011-12 and 2018-19, Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) expanded at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 11.46 per cent to Rs 16.06 trillion (US$ 222.58 billion) whereas the Net State Domestic Product (NSDP) expanded at a CAGR of 11.45 per cent to about Rs 14.41 trillion (US$199.69 billion).
During 2018-19, total merchandise exports from the state stood at US$ 30.52 billion. According to the DPIIT, cumulative FDI inflows in Tamil Nadu during April 2000 to September 2019 stood at US$ 31.20 billion.
