28 November 2012 - Delhi’s social set turned up at “A Night of Silk and Jewels” – held at the Thai Residence in celebration of the 80th Birthday Anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, highlighting traditions and cultural ties between India and Thailand and projecting the image of Thailand as a luxury destination.
The Royal Thai Embassy collaborated with Lotus Arts de Vivre, one of Asia’s leading designers of luxury handmade jewellery, objects d’art and home décor, and designer Bina Modi to foster stronger Thai-Indian relations by curating a creative journey through contemporary Thai arts and culture. Organizational partners also included Minor Residence, Tourism Authority of Thailand, VFS Global, Thai Airways, Dusit Devarana, and Lebua New Delhi.
Targeting prominent guests from India and Thailand, the soiree was destined to be a one of a kind event to showcase the best of Thailand as a luxury destination for Indian travelers, who could feel right at home as Thailand and India has much in common in term of heritage, tradition, and culture. Ambassador Pisan Manawapat said “I hope to present Thailand as the image of luxury in Asia and use this event to cultivate and deepen our ties with India.”
All organizational partners brought the very best that Thailand has to offer to India. Guests were immersed in an atmosphere that recreates a sumptuous Thai soiree featuring Thai art & design, Thai cuisine, progressive Thai music, and Thai floral arrangements.
Ambassador Pisan Manawapat took to the stage to pay special tributes to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand for her lifelong contribution to revive, preserve and cultivate folk arts and crafts which have always been a part of Thai traditional way of life. Through the SUPPORT Foundation, the villagers receive training from the crafts masters, and are able to produce silk fabric and other handicrafts to supplement their income. Ambassador Pisan recommended that next time Indian friends visit Thailand, they should make a stop at Anandta Samakom Throne Hall to appreciate some of the most exquisite display of handicrafts which few would believe that they were created just over the last 20 years, a permanent salute to Her Majesty's passion and support for the revival of this ancient art and Thai tradition.
The highlight of the evening featured “Indo-Thai Silk Journey” fashion show, the Thai silk couture collection by designers Bina and her granddaughter Priyal Modi. The specially invited models included Mrs. Brenda Beck, spouse of Canadian High Commissioner, Mrs. Romina Pappalardo and Mrs. Wanchana Manawapat, Ambassadors of Paraquay and Thailand respectively, Mrs. Smriti Bhatia, wife of Mr. Ankur Bhatia of the BIRD Group, and Mrs. Sangita Mehra, wife of Mr. Ajay Mehra of Mehrasons Jewellers.
